Came across this priceless 05/15/67 letter from Dan Pendleton addressed jointly to Hyland Johns, Woiky Walter & my Dad, Raymond (Pete) Lockhart:
My path has not so far crossed any of yours business-wise in the work of the (Bryn Athyn) Society, although I have taught and/or will in the future teach your children in the Academy.
A thought crossed my mind this past Friday evening as I sat listening to a most inspiring semi-annual society meeting. I am sure appreciation is expressed to you for the scores of hours per year that you put in voluntarily toward the work of the church and its educational efforts. But even more important, I believe, is the quality of the attitude behind your contribution, which attitude is a positive inspiration to men who, like myself in my own small way, are striving to exert wise leadership from the spiritual and educational level.
Our ministers and teaches are often told of the inspiration that they give to the laity. Here is one minister and teacher who finds a deep return of the inspiration from men such as yourselves, from the way in which you give of your time and energy to the ultimation of those uses which otherwise would remain simply as lofty ideals and visions in the minds of clergy and faculty.
I went home from that meeting a little frightened by the sheer magnitude of what lies ahead; but my main feeling was one of inspiration and a sense of new strength and assurance in the work that we have to do. With men like you to undergird and carry forward our principles of church and school, we can't lose.
So, thanks, from just one individual guy! It has added just one more building block to the foundation of my own resolve relating to the new area of the work that I will be entering into next September (ANC/BS headmaster).
Yours very sincerely,
Dandridge Pendleton
